Surge Protection for your Furnace and/or Air Conditioner

Surge Protection

Power surges are the silent killer for home appliances and HVAC equipment. Most homeowners protect their electronics but leave more valued equipment unprotected. Surges can wipe out equipment and leave you searching for answers on what happened and why. They can also cause frustrating electrical "gremlins" that are causing trouble but are so hard to trace down. Furnace and air conditioner warranties typically will not cover damage done by surges.

Recommended Systems

Equipment that does not have complex, costly control boards do not benefit as much as the equipment above. With standard air conditioners the only item protected from a surge would be the compressor, which are much tougher at handling a surge than delicate boards. If you would like to add surge protection to standard air conditioners, or chimney vented furnaces or boilers, we certainly can do it.

What is TPMOV technology?

TPMOV stands for Thermally Protected Metal Oxide Varistor. That is the device that determines when to active surge protection. When there is an over-voltage, the varistor pulls excess current away from the circuit to protect the device. Electricity is going to take the easiest path first, and this makes the ground irresistable. In most mild cases of a surge, the varister will go right back to protecting for the next emergency.

When the device fails from an extreme surge or deteriorates to the point of failure - the varistor will overheat which will cause the "Thermally Protected" element to warp releasing an arc shield, essentially shutting itself down safely. A red light will then be displayed on the surge protector. Your device will continue to work, but will not have any surge protection.

About the AG3000

Built by Intermatic using the licensed TPMOV technology, the AG3000 can be wired to 110 or 220 volt circuits. It comes in a weather proof enclosure with adaptors to be installed directly into the side of the disconnect box if outdoors, or by the furnace/boiler switch if indoors. It comes with a 3 year warranty and features a $7,500 connected warranty. This surge protector is designed to be sacrificed when a surge occurs. The varistor inside is capable of handling more than one mild surge, and failing only under an extreme surge or too many mild surges (wearing it out), as well as age.

We offer installation of this surge protector during our tune-up visits or when we are installing new equipment.
